Open Source for Embedded Linux

Linutronix is an active contributor to the Linux kernel and Open Source Embedded Linux ecosystem, with a strong focus on real-time Linux and embedded systems.  Our team actively develops and maintains critical projects including the ELBE build system, Preempt-RT, and minicoredumper. We provide open source embedded Linux solutions for demanding production environments.

The same code that runs in mainline Linux and in projects thousands of other engineers depend on is the code we bring to your product not a variant only we understand. With decades of Linux development experience, we connect upstream innovation with industry, and deliver production-ready solutions for embedded devices, industrial automation, and more.

Linux Kernel and Real-time

We play a key role in the development of real-time Linux and the broader Linux kernel ecosystem. We are recognized as original contributors to the PREEMPT_RT patch set—the de facto standard for enabling real-time capabilities in Linux.

Besides real-time development, our engineers actively contribute to upstream Linux kernel development, collaborating with the global open source community to work on all kinds of areas including:

  • Kernel architecture and performance optimization
  • Real-time scheduling and interrupt handling
  • Testing and Debugging
  • Long-term maintenance for embedded and industrial systems

By bridging upstream development with production requirements, Linutronix delivers stable open source embedded Linux solutions for demanding real-time and industrial applications.

ELBE – Embedded Linux Build Environment

ELBE is an open source project initiated by Linutronix for building Debian-based Linux images for embedded systems. It enables:

  • Automated and deterministic generation of root file systems
  • Seamless integration into embedded development workflows
  • Consistent and verifiable system builds based on Debian

Specifically ELBE is designed for embedded Linux development, industrial systems, and applications requiring long-term maintainability.

Unlike generic build systems, ELBE leverages Debian’s stability and extensive package ecosystem while providing the control needed for embedded deployments. Additionally ELBE servers as the build system of our Industrial Grade Linux Operating System IGLOS.

minicoredumper - analyzing embedded Linux

Core dumps are one of the most effective methods for analyzing system crashes in the field. When an application fails, a snapshot of its current memory state is captured, allowing for detailed post-mortem analysis.

In embedded systems, generating full core dumps for complex applications often proves impractical due to:

  • Limited storage capacity on embedded devices
  • Network bandwidth constraints for remote debugging

The Minicoredumper is a lightweight approach that allows precise control over what data is recorded during a crash. Therefore a targeted selection significantly reduces storage requirements while still enabling meaningful and in-depth debugging.
